Retro Gaming Tattoos - Shane Barrett AKA Sonic

After putting a forum post up in the retrocollect.com retro gaming section all about the gaming tattoos on our site we have found another willing volunteer for The Games Shed!

His name is Shane Barrett and we had a quick chat about his tattoos.

TGS: Hi Shane, Thanks for agreeing to a chat with us. First of can you tell us a little about yourself.

SB: My name is Shane, I'm 20 and Live in Dublin in Ireland. I don't get up to much, just work and get tattooed!

TGS: Let's talk about your gaming tattoos. Where are they and can we see them?

SB: Both are on my left leg at my ankle area. And yes you can see them! (Excuse the hairy legs!)

TGS: Loving the before and after of the sonic tattoo, its really bedded in nicely! Both him and Pikachu look great!!

Any chance you can tell us the story behind them?

SB: Not much story behind them, I love games (obviously) and decided to dedicate my left leg to video games and cartoons. Pikcahu and Sonic are just puzzle pieces in the jigsaw that will eventually be my leg sleeve!

TGS: We would love to do another article when you have the rest done. In the meantime where did you get Sonic and Pikachu done?

SB: Sonic was done by the very talented and awesome Rob in Colourworks in Temple Bar in Dublin, and Pikachu was done by another great artist Paul who was apprenticing at the time so I offered him up my leg!

TGS: How long did they take?

SB: Sonic took the guts of 3 hours to do because of all the colours, shading and detail and Pikachu took about an hour and a half as it was Paul's second ever tattoo to do so he was a bit slow.

TGS: Did they hurt?

SB: Yes and no! Tattooing does hurt, but it's not an unbearable pain, just more of an annoying pain. Imagine a cat scratching you on sunburned skin. That's the best way I can describe it.  It's also down to placement and the persons pain threshold too. Legs are grand but foot and collarbone were the worst for me!

TGS: That is definitely the best I have ever heard the tattooing experience described! You must get loads of comments about them.

SB: Well nearly all mine are covered by clothes but when I'm wearing shorts and they're visible I do. They're always positive which is great!

TGS: Do you have any funny stories you would like to share?

SB: Not really, although I did gain the nickname Sonic because of my tattoo!

TGS: We think that's a great nickname.. Last question - Are you planning on getting any more???

SB: Absolutely! Tattoos are definitely addictive! Like I mentioned above I'm planning on a full video game and cartoon character leg sleeve which will incorporate Mario, Pacman, Amaterasu from Okami, Reptar, Ryo and Nozomi from Shenmue, Angry Beavers and much much more! I haven't fully figured out where everything will go yet but all in due time!

Thanks for your time Shane. We look forward to seeing the full sleeve!!
