You are reading this blog, reminiscing how and where you obtained a certain game, or where and when you first played it.
These thoughts bring to life a whole world of other memories - places, smells, names and faces, but most importantly, possessions! (We aren’t materialists.. promise!)
Today we take a look at some items which remind us of the retro games we feature, the first time around :)
The Prodigy - Experience
This album, released Sept 1992 evokes nothing but nostalgia. Along with being the year and more precisely the very summer we started secondary school, we'd been a little under two years into Sega Mega Drive gaming. The SNES had been released a little over 6 months here in the UK and this album seemed to be a 16-bit gamer's life-soundtrack.
Stand out tracks include 'Charly', 'Out Of Space' & 'Wind It Up'.
If you do not own this album, shame on you.
Coca-Cola Yo-Yos
In the mid 80's Coca-Cola, along with manufacturer Russell launched a collection of Coke branded Yo-Yo's which caused a huge stir in the school playground.
It didn't matter how you got hold of one, you just knew you had to have one none of your friends had.
At this time you'd have been playing on your Amstrad CPC 464 or your ZX Spectrum... if you could squeeze it in. After all, 'Walking The Dog' took a little practice!
Spliffy Clothing
Again, back to 1992. The fashion was bad.... VERY bad.
If you were in the UK, you'd probably be walking around in an over-sized pair of jeans with this little fella stitched onto one of your back pockets. The jeans were made of cheap denim, ill-fitting and had a rubbish name, but hey, 'Spliffy' sounded rebellious, right?
Raleigh Burner
Ah, fond memories. The Raleigh Burner! THE mode of transportation from 1982.
How else would you get to your friends house to play them at Sensible Soccer?
Garbage Pail Kids
Remember these amazingly gruesome cards from the 90's... I remember having a whole deck of them and wish I had kept hold of them!!
TDK Tapes
If you are a kid of the 80's you'll know all about TDKs! Pirate radio shows were the talk of the class and the only way you could be sure you wouldn't miss a song was to bang one of these bad boys into your hifi system and hit the little red circle of joy!
If you didn't have a blank tape you could simply steal one of your mums Fleetwood Mac tapes and ram something into the little slots ontop of the tape to enable the recording function! Ah... good times!
TAB Clear
If you are from the UK you may remember this for showing up in News Agents for all of five minutes in the early 90's at a trial price of between 20 and 25p! It was coke... but it was clear! What the heck?!
Then it vanished... along with so many other joys of that era
Sinclair C5
Now, I'm not actually old enough to have had the joy of driving one of these puppies, but do clearly remember a couple of cars on my street had these mounted to their roofs.
The C5 was a battery operated vehicle meant to revolutionise the way we travelled to work, brought to us by the very same guy who brought us the ZX Spectrum - Clive Sinclair.
What the hell were you thinking Clive?!
Troll Doll
For some reason I still cannot put my finger on, these little ugly things became the talk of the playground in the late 80's. If you didn't have one you'd do anything you could to get your hands on one.. why? Who knows.. that's like answering 'Why are we here'.
Boglins
Along the same line as Troll Dolls were Boglins, except you could shove your hand inside these and move the eyes and mouth and scare your sister.
They had a certain whiff about them too and came in a box which doubled as a cage!
That concludes our first look at some of the items which bring back fond gaming memories, we've obviously not listed everything, we'd have to write a book to do that!
If you have any suggestions as to what items bring back gaming memories for you, drop us a tweet: @GamesShed
