Is Mickey Mouse taking the Mickey?!

In our hunt to find retro gold we have played more than our fair share of games, some of which we feel may slightly crossed into the deep, dark realms of copying.

This copying at school would have been ruled out by simply guarding your work with a well-placed hand, so your work shy neighbour couldn't take a peek. However, in the world of video games it seems that if a game sells a lot of units, copy the idea as closely as possible, no one will notice ;)

The game we are talking about? Mickey’s Speedway USA!

Take a glance at a still of the aforementioned criminal and you will see guilt pouring out of it’s exhaust, take a whiff of its gameplay and you will smell the excretions of envy.
The game in question which it has made a shady, tourist-hotspot-style caricature of? Mario Kart 64 of course… but I’m guessing you didn’t need us to tell you that?!

The wonderful world of Mickey and his friends Donald, Daisy, Minnie, Goofy & Pete, with unlockable characters Huey, Dewey, Louie & Ludwig Von Drake must race around US circuits such as Los Angeles, New York and Alaska to find Mickey’s dog Pluto, who has been kidnapped for his Diamond Collar by some pesky weasels.

The similarity to Mario Kart starts from the moment you start revving your engine to the moment you cross the finish line.

You’ll notice power slides with the use of a shoulder button to get you around tight bends, power up boxes containing speed boosts (Mushrooms in Mario Kart) , remote control airplanes (red shells), Baseballs (Green Shells), oil slicks (bananas) & invincibility bubbles (Stars).
This game is a lot of fun despite being basically a re-skinned Mario Kart and it is highly playable.
