A blast from the past - Nintendo virtual boy
Some of you may remember the days when Virtual Reality was all the rage... Blocky polygons were amazing! Red and black graphics were amazing. Pop swatches and global hypercolour where donned by teenagers everywhere as well as rocking bad boy phones like the Motorola 8900. 1995 for me was the year I listened to Happy Hardcore and drum n bass round the clock whilst doing next to nothing at school and generally playing on my SNES all the time!
1995 to be exact, was the year that the massivly under hyped Nintendo Virtual Boy was released... Kind of a handheld but at the same time not, as it had a camera tripod type stand. The Virtual Boy only allowed
you red and black coloured games because it was the cheapest method and
did not need a back light. DO NOT let that put you off..
Some of the games included:
Mario Tennis
Mario Clash
3D Tetris
Wario Land
Galactic Pinball
The Nintendo Virtual Boy was created by Gunpei Yokoi. After the creation he was given a role where his input was minimul towards Nintendos future creations. He tragically died in a car
crash on October 4, 1997 .
The Virtual Boy was only supported for about a year and around the 8 month mark was discontinued. At that stage the only people making games for it were Nintendo.
The console is somewhat a collectors item because of the small amount sold. Only 800,000 were shipped all in all and they are now selling for stupid money on ebay. Check out some of the auctions:
